How long is the cheer season?

Cheerleading has two seasons; sideline and competitive. Athletes gain their eligibility to compete in the winter by cheering for fall football games. Athletes practice over the summer to prepare for the football season. Football season runs from late August through late October. Competition season starts early November and ends in late February. Competition season is optional - athletes can choose to only participate in sideline cheerleading.

How much does cheerleading cost?

Cheerleading is a generally expensive sport; but Glencoe Athletics Admin and Coaches do their best at keeping costs affordable without compromising the quality of gear, training, and experience that the athletes receive. Athletes should expect about to pay about $400-$700 to participate during the fall, and $200-$400 for competitive fees if your athlete decides to compete. Cost should NEVER be the deciding factor as to why an athlete does not participate. Please email [email protected] if finances are holding your athlete back from trying out.

Can my athlete make the team without cheer experience?

Yes! While no experience is necessary; many sports translate well into cheerleading.. For example; gymnasts, dancers, softball, tumbling and track athletes generally take to cheerleading naturally. Coaches take into account athletes experience at tryouts and look for athletes who show potential.

How can my athlete prepare during the off season for tryouts?

New to cheer athletes should team up with current cheerleaders to go learn the basics of cheerleading.. If you don't know a current cheerleader, youtube has many great tutorials on cheer basics. Strong cheer motions are on of the most important cheer basics. Athletes who show knowledge of motions coming into tryouts with a leg up! Next, learn the basic technique of jumps. Our program focuses on toe touches, fronts, and pikes. Finally, refine any tumbling skills you may have by attending a local cheer or gymnastics gym. Work on perfecting handstands, cartwheels and forward rolls to show coaches that you can master the tumbling shapes.

Returning cheerleaders can attend open gyms at gymnastics and all star gyms, getting tumbling and jumping reps in to keep their skills up. Invite your teammates to keep each other company! To level up your skills; athletes can attend private lessons and tumbling classes at local gyms. Doing other sports during the off season is another great way to continue conditioning for the following cheer season. Cheer athletes often do great with track, lacrosse, and softball!
